The Event

On August 7, Sunil Amrith, Yale University’s newly appointed Vice Provost for International Affairs and Renu and Anand Dhawan Professor of History, will visit China for the first time in his role as Vice Provost and share about his latest book The Burning Earth: A History at Yale Center Beijing. In this expansive book, Amrith explores several pivotal moments in history and offers insights into the earth’s ecological plight in the context of human exploitation.

Sunil Amrith is the Vice Provost for International Affairs at Yale University, where he leads Yale's international strategy and engagement efforts. He is the Renu and Anand Dhawan Professor of History at Yale University, with a secondary appointment as Professor at the Yale School of the Environment. He also serves as the Henry R. Luce Director of the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies.

Amrith's research focuses on the movements of people and the ecological processes that have connected South and Southeast Asia, and has expanded his research to encompass global environmental history. His most recent book, The Burning Earth: A History, was named a 2024 "essential read" by The New Yorker and is being translated into ten languages.
